About Michael Lomax

  • Mediator/Conflict Resolution Trainer
    • 1998-present
  • Lawyer – Private Practice
    • 1994-2016
  • Affiliate Speaker/Trainer – The High Conflict Institute, San Diego, California
    2011 to Present
High Conflict Institute was co-founded by Bill Eddy, LCSW, Esq., to provide education and resources to professionals and consumers who find themselves handling High Conflict situations. After years of working with High Conflict disputes in many settings, we came to the conclusion that these disputes are not driven by complex issues, but by High Conflict Personalities. Managing High Conflict People (HCPs) usually involves using skills which are the opposite of what one feels like doing.  Learning these skills takes time and practice, but can make an amazing difference in resolving, managing and containing High Conflict disputes.
  • Lead Mediator – Mediate BC Society – Family Mediation Referral Program
    2012 to Present
Michael has been a lead mediator with Mediate BC’s Family Mediation Program (FMP) since 2012.  The FMP provides the opportunity for Associate Mediators develop skills and gain practical experience by co-mediating cases with highly experienced Lead Mediators in their region in a wide variety of family disputes including parenting responsibilities, child support and property division.
  • Associate Mediator/Trainer – Pacific Region Dispute Resolution Centre, Conflict Management Program, Department of National Defence
    2002 – 2012
After his term as Director for the DRC, Michael continued to work as an associate mediator and trainer (part-time employee or contractor).  His work involved:

    • Mediating complex matters, including group interventions
    • Conducting workplace conflict assessments
    • Leading many conflict resolution trainings
    • Designing course training packages
  • Director – Pacific Region Dispute Resolution Centre, Conflict Management Program
    Department of National Defence
Michael was responsible for rollout of a workplace conflict resolution system for all DND personnel in British Columbia (over 9,000 military and civilian personnel plus 18,000 cadets). This program’s introduction was a significant undertaking in not only introducing consensual dispute resolution processes to DND, such as mediation, but also championing a shift in the culture of DND to integrate the use of interest-based approaches and conflict resolution skills.
